The Best Man’s Wedding Speech
Best Man - Your Duties

As Best Man, you have been specially chosen, perhaps from quite a long list of possible candidates. The bride and groom may have debated your selection at length. This is a huge privilege. You have certain tasks to perform throughout the day and this must be done to the best of your ability. It is your duty and it is expected of you. Some of your objectives are simply impossible – how can you be the last to leave the church and simultaneously, the first to arrive at the reception to receive the guests? But when it comes to your speech, you can not simply stand up and mumble a few unrehearsed lines. Experienced speakers and comedians rarely ad lib – even when they look as if they are!
How long should I talk for?
For a formal ceremony 5–7 minutes is the norm. Longer than that and the guests may start wandering – mentally if not physically.
Finding the right tone
Although the bride may carry some blue, your speech should contain none. If there are any taboo subjects you must let us know. If in doubt, leave it out. You should strive to offend absolutely no one during your speech – although you are almost expected to get a few friendly digs in at the groom
What do I need to say?
Having responded to the Bridesmaids toast (if there was one) there are lots of people to mention and lots of stories you could tell. We will make sure that you cover all the bases and also allow you space for your own tales and recollections according to the information you provide in the questionnaire. Yours speech will normally end in the final toast to the Bride and Groom
What if I forget my speech?
We will provide bound prompt cards for you to fill in yourself – because only you know the bits you are likeley to forget.
And Finally....
This is a day of fun and celebration. Enjoy it.
